There is no competition in yoga, it is important to work to your own ability, and not to compare yourself with anyone else in the class. Become aware of your own body and work with it. Only you know how your body feels. With regular yoga practice you will become increasingly supple whilst gaining strength.
Please tell your teacher if you suffer any discomfort during your yoga practice. You should feel a stretch of your muscles, but not pain or strain.
Don't do anything that you are not happy doing.
Do not practise yoga after a heavy meal. Yoga should ideally be practised with an empty stomach, so allow at least two hours after a large meal and an hour after a light snack.
Wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict your movement in any way. Keep jewellery to a minimum. Asana work is practised with bare feet.
Bring warm clothing and socks, and/or a blanket for relaxation.
Turn off your mobile phone during a yoga class.
You will need a non-slip yoga mat, a block and a belt or tie. Mats and belts are widely available or can be purchased from me. Blocks are available from me.
If you have any health problems or are undergoing treatment for any medical condition you should consult your doctor prior to practising yoga. Although yoga improves your health and may often help to alleviate some conditions, it must never be used as a substitute for medical treatment or advice.
Please advise your teacher of any conditions that may affect your ability to practise yoga, for example back conditions, joint problems, high blood pressure, pregnancy.
Yoga can be practised by pregnant women after the first trimester. If you are an experienced yoga practitioner you can continue in a general yoga class. If you have never done any yoga before you are advised to attend a specific Yoga for Pregnancy class.
